Alleged thief tries to rob two Msida stores, wounds shop owner in the process

Police arrest 28-year-old as 54-year-old is rushed to hospital

A young man who allegedly tried to rob at least two different Msida stores in quick succession on Saturday was arrested by police on Saturday as he approached a third shop.

Police were put on the man’s trail after a shop assistant at a store on Triq Victor Denaro stopped them as they were on patrol and told them that a man had tried and failed to steal money from the shop’s cash register, grabbed some other minor items and fled.

Officers immediately started a search of the area and soon discovered an injured man in Triq FS Caruana. The victim, a 54-year-old from Siġġiewi, told police that a man had just tried to rob his store.

An ambulance took the injured man to Mater Dei Hospital, where doctors certified him as being grievously injured.

Police continued their search for the alleged perpetrator and spotted him by another store. They arrested him and are keeping him in police custody for questioning.

The suspect is a 28-year-old from Sliema.
