Mickelson Steps Out of Character at U.S. Open

If his penalty on the 13th hole was any indication, Mickelson’s shot at his first U.S. Open title is essentially over

SOUTHAMPTON, N.Y.—Phil Mickelson, who’s known for playing by the rules, stepped out of character on his birthday at the U.S. Open.

Mickelson, who turned 48 on Saturday, hit a moving ball at the par-4 13th hole at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.
