Gas leak that sparked evacuation of Docklands building now contained
Hundreds of people have been evacuated from a Docklands office and retail building following a gas leak.
The "substantial" gas leak has now been shut off.
Police have closed Bourke Street - west of Harbour Esplanade - as emergency services and the gas company contain the threat on Enterprize Way.
“Fire fighters arrived in scene this morning to find a gas leak impacting out through the footpath, with a gas cloud coming out of that break in the pipe," Metropolitan Fire Brigade commander Steven Watts said.
Police ordered that towers one and two of 800 Bourke street be evacuated, and a portion of the street blocked off.
John Mason and Senior Sargent at Melbourne North Police Station said that between 200 to 300 office workers were evacuated and taken to a safe location.
“It was concerning, it was a significant gas leak. MFB arrived early took control of the incident,” he said.
800 Bourke Street is a retail and office building that includes the National Australia Bank's Melbourne headquarters.
Stephen Moody the Incident Health Commander for Ambulance Victoria, said they have assess four people who were affected by gas inhalation.
“They have all been deemed okay and have left the scene to go home,” he said.
The symptoms of gas inhalation include nausea and head aches, and can be fatal if ingested at high levels.
After arriving at the scene MFB officers hosed the cloud to disperse the gas and began working with the gas company to shut off the leak.
Excavation equipment arrived on scene and began tearing up part of the road to access the point of the gas leak.
“Specialist firefighters have been deployed with detecting equipment to monitor the air, both in and around the incident.”
