BENGALURU: In a case of murder for gain, a 38-year-old taxi driver killed his aunt and robbed her of `15,000 and a gold chain in Bagaluru on Thursday night.

The accused, however, was arrested within three hours of the incident coming to light, the police said.
The deceased has been identified as D Muniyamma, 77, a resident of Bagaluru Extension. Though she had two sons, she was residing alone.

The accused N Ganesh was working as a driver and addicted to alcohol. A senior police officer said that the incident took place late on Thursday night when Muniyamma was alone and was about to sleep. Ganesh, who came there, asked her for some money as he knew she had withdrawn `15,000 from an ATM. Muniyamma denied to give him the cash and asked him to leave.

He waited for a while and then decided to kill her after she went to sleep. He smothered her and escaped with cash and gold chain. At around 11.30 pm, Ganesh's mother, who came to Muniyamma's house to sleep with her, found the door locked from outside. She then checked with the neighbours who went inside only to see Muniyamma lying dead on the bed. They alerted the Bagaluru police.
