The Geauga County Historical Society will soon open its newest building and historical display, The Maple Museum of Geauga County.

The grand opening will be noon to 4 p.m., June 23. The public is invited to attend the event free of charge and learn more about the county’s rich and sweet history of maple sugar and syrup production, according to a news release.

The museum will include artifacts and early accounts of maple sugaring beginning with the native Americans and continuing through to the modern day, with explanations of the tapping, collection, and boiling processes.

Attendees can learn about the old-fashioned sugaring parties, the success of Ohio maple producers at the 1893 World’s Fair, the Geauga County Maple Festival, the families of the county who have produced the product for generations, as well as the identities of the today’s leading maple syrup makers, the businesses and industries that have supported maple syrup production, and profiles of the Ohio Maple Hall of Fame members.

A variety of art depicting the lore and intrigue of maple sugaring will be displayed. There will be a number of children’s activities, from reading, to hands-on projects, to search-and-find challenges.

There will also be an opportunity to visit the attached sugarhouse which has been used the past four seasons to produce the Historical Society’s annual yield of maple syrup. Maple stirs will be available for those wishing a taste, and maple syrup, in various quantities, will be also offered for sale.

Century Village Museum is located on the southeast corner of Burton Square, 14653 East Park St.
