Life continued to be affected in Kodagu and parts of Hassan, Chikkamagaluru and Shivamogga districts on Thursday as there was no respite from heavy rains lashing the region.
People in many places, including Bhagamandala, were marooned owing to the overflowing river, and landslips affected road connectivity. The stretch of highway from Makutta to Perambadi had been closed to traffic for a month for major repair works, and another road connecting Gonikoppa to Mysuru became out of bounds for vehicles after a temporary bridge collapsed near Thitimathi on Thursday.
Srividya, Deputy Commissioner of Kodagu, said the district administration had deployed inflatable boats at Bhagamandala, Napoklu, and other places to ferry people as the roads were waterlogged.
Twenty-seven personnel from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached Kodagu on Wednesday night and were involved in relief operations. Ms. Srividya said they would assist the district administration. Schools and colleges remained closed in Kodagu on Thursday.
Overflowing rivers, submerged bridges, inundated roads, flooded low-lying areas were the common scenes in many parts of Chikkamagaluru.
The premises of Sharada Peetha in Sringeri were inundated. The overflowing Tunga had left Sandhyavandana Mantap, a dining hall, the walkway to Narasimha Vana, and the parking yards inundated. Visitors to the temple had a tough time.
Road connectivity between Chikkamagaluru and Dakshina Kannada districts was badly hit due to overflowing rivers.
Meanwhile, the Sharavathi, Bhadra, Tunga, and Varada rivers were in spate in Shivamogga district owing to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas. The water level in the Linganamakki and Bhadra reservoirs has risen by 3 feet each in the past 24 hours. As many as 12 houses in Tirthahalli taluk were partially damaged when trees, uprooted by the heavy winds, fell on them.
Train stops midway
Railway authorities had to stop the Yeshwantpur-Mangalore Gomateshwara Express midway as landslips were reported on the track near Siruvagilu in the Western Ghats.
The train returned to Hassan, where the passengers were provided with alternative travel arrangements.
