Police officers are responding to reports of gunshots in Tauranga's Christopher Street.

A woman has been rushed to hospital after reportedly being shot at a Tauranga property.

Officers were called to a house in Christopher Street about 6.20pm on Friday after receiving multiple reports of gunshots in the area.

"Initial indications suggest that a woman at the property has suffered a gunshot wound," police said in a statement.

The woman was taken to Tauranga Hospital.

Police said they were unable to say how serious the woman's injuries were.

Officers were still at the scene on Friday night.

One Christopher St resident, who declined to be named, heard a "large firecracker sound" just after 6pm.

Her neighbour rang her shortly afterwards to say a person had been shot.

"Initially, when I first heard the bang I just thought someone had set off one of those crackers," she said.

"My neighbour rang police and later, when I peaked out my window, I could see a few police cars outside a house just a few doors down."

The woman said Christopher St was a safe but busy street.

She didn't know who lived at the house where the woman was reportedly shot.

"I have renters either side of me and there may well be renters in that house where police went to. No one has come to my door to say what's happened. I'm staying inside with the lights off."
