Good news and bad news for fans of comedian Jordan Klepper.
The bad news, according to Deadline, is that Comedy Central has canceled the satirical daily talk show The Opposition with Jordan Klepper after one season. Its final episode will air June 28.
The good news is that Klepper will be doing a new show for Comedy Central eponymously titled Klepper, which is slated to air in early 2019. The weekly series finds him back doing field segments, just like he did as a correspondent for The Daily Show, traveling around the country and talking to people.
The Opposition premiered in September of last year. It was meant to be the satirical Colbert Report to Trevor Noah's more earnest Daily Show, with Klepper in character as a right-wing pundit. But that premise has proven to be unsustainable, and so the creative team is shifting its focus.
Stephen Colbert Is Glad He's Not Doing The Colbert Report in the Trump Era
"The show was anticipating the Steve Bannons and Alex Joneses of the world to be front and center, and the truth is, it's really Trump front and center," Comedy Central president Ken Alterman told Deadline. "It was a combination of looking at how the landscape has changed a little bit differently from what we anticipated but also, we've never wavered on Jordan as talent, we're such big believers in him, and we've been thinking where he is at his strongest. He is so strong in the field being out in the real world with real people. He has done such fantastic work in his own special, Jordan Klepper Solves Guns, and as a correspondent on The Daily Show."
The new show will keep many of the executive producers from The Opposition, and likely many of the writers, and will send Klepper (as himself) back out into the wild where he's at his best. Production will start in July.
The Opposition with Jordan Klepper's series finale will air Thursday, June 28 at 11:30/10:30c on Comedy Central.
