According to television duo Kirstie Allsopp and Phil Spencer, Smart Metres are the way forward when it comes to tracking spending and saving money on your energy bills.
The duo appeared on Sky News this morning to announce their tour, which will focus on the national rollout of smart metres. The Smart Energy tour will visit 10 cities in the UK to encourage homeowners to use smart metres.
According to the duo, smart metres can save Briton’s £560 million a year as a nation.
Savings per household can differ, but on average it is a two per cent saving a year. But this is dependant on each individual.
With 11 million smart metres in UK homes already, smart metres can give updates to energy providers, allowing easy switching between providers if necessary.

Talking to Sky News, Phil said: “The way we measure energy in our homes on the old metres is kind of outdated, it’s very much nineteenth century technology in the 21st century.
“Smart metres are about giving people the option to have control over the energy they use and the energy companies they buy it from.”
Smart metres are free to install and can automatically send daily meter readings to energy suppliers, resulting in a more accurate meter reading.
Talking frankly to presenter Stephen Dixon, Kirstie used the example of operating a hairdryer, and how much energy each drying session could potentially cost.
Joking with her former co-host, Kirstie and Stephen told Phil he wouldn’t need to worry about the cost of hairdryer, due to his lack of hair.

Kirstie revealed that smart metres will reveal how much energy each hair dryer is using, giving users the opportunity to swap the appliance for a more energy efficient one.
“Have you got the most efficient hairdryer? How many times do you dry your hair?” she asked.
Kirstie said: “Let’s sat you were living in a house with three girls and everyone was drying their hair” she said. “You’d want to know how much that is costing you”.
According to Phil, the new metres allow you to “see what you’re spending”, so when smart meter users put the hairdryer on, the meter will go up and accurate energy usage can be seen.
“In today’s data driven society, you known how much petrol you’re getting, you can use your phone to see how much sleep you’re getting, you can see how fast you’re heart is beating, why shouldn’t you be able to see how much energy you’re using?”

Energy bills are a massive part of Briton’s expenditure, and the Briton’s have had estimated bills for so long and not been able to see how much is being spent. Smart metres are set to change that.
“We don’t do guessing in any other field of spending in our lives,” reinforced Kirstie on the need for the metres in British homes.
Unlike traditional metres, smart metres aren’t tucked away in a dark corner or basement of a house, and are available to constantly check and control energy usage.
“As a country we want to save energy, as an individual you want to save money, but as a nation we all know that energy use has to be reduced,” said Kirstie on why the metres are free to install.
Yesterday, Martin Lewis told Good Morning Britain viewers how they can save £400 on their energy bills, where he warned viewers of a hike in N-Power costs.
