Employment was in the media spotlight once again this week. But the frenzy over the Supreme Court’s ruling on the employment status of former Pimlico Plumbers “contractor” Gary Smith is a storm in a teacup. As lawyers have pointed out, the actual details of the case – which established Smith’s status as a “worker” rather than “self-employed” – are extremely specific. Their measured words are no match, however, for the outcry of individuals like Frances O’Grady – who has seized this opportunity to make spurious claims of “exploitation” – or Charlie Mullins...
