This is the real deal; one of the three Ford GT40s that conquered the 1966 Le Mans race is now heading to an auction, and more specifically the car number #5 which finished third overall.

The gold Ford GT40 was driven by Ronnie Bucknum and Dick Hutcherson for 348 laps, allowing Ford to bag the first three positions and dominate Ferrari in an iconic motorsport moment.

Needless to say that the new owner will have to have extra deep pockets. The motorsport heritage of the specific GT40 is expected to drive its price up to $12,000,000 but don’t act surprised if it goes for more.

After the iconic Le Mans race, the car participated in Daytona in 1967 and used for testing in Le Mans the same year. It never raced since then. In 2003 this really important Ford GT40 was restored back to its original 1966 Le Mans condition and since then, it has appeared in all the usual for a classic of this calibre places: Goodwood Festival of Speed, Pebble Beach, Villa d’Este and even at the Grand Tour.

Power comes from Ford’s 7.0-litre race V8, which should make around 485hp and play the sort of melodies that hits you right in the feels. RM Sotheby’s is going to auction this rather special Ford at their Monterey sale in late August.
