Thane residents get one more month to compost waste

As the deadline for composting waste ended on Friday, the Thane Municipal Corporation (TMC) gave residents more time to set up the system.

The municipal corporation had said it would stop collecting garbage from those housing societies which generate more than 100kg waste every day. It directed them to set up their own compost system.

The TMC’s solid waste management (SWM) department had announced that it would stop collecting garbage from big housing societies from June 15.

On Friday, the TMC commissioner Sanjeev Jaiswal directed officials to extend the deadline for a month so that citizens can get time to adopt the waste management system.

The officials said housing societies, schools, colleges and commercial structures which generate more than 100kg will face TMC action if they don’t comply within a month.

The TMC had said it would impose ₹500 fine per day on those societies which fail to implement the rule.

“Many housing societies approached the municipal commissioner and other senior officials of the SWM department over extending the deadline. They wanted more time to set up the system,” said Sandeep Malvi, deputy municipal commissioner.
