AFTON - A man shot and killed early Wednesday morning at the Colony House Motel has been identified by the Augusta County Sheriff's Office.
A suspect in the shooting is being held on a charge of manslaughter.
Authorities said the shooting took place shortly before 4 a.m. when Gary D. Mawyer, 34, of Stuarts Draft, was on the property of the motel and in the parking lot when he got into a verbal altercation with Darin E. Davis, 47, who lives at the motel.
The sheriff's office said Davis pulled a 9mm pistol and shot Mawyer once in the upper left arm.
Mawyer collapsed a few feet from where he was shot and died at the scene, the sheriff's office said.
Investigators are trying to determine why Mawyer was on the motel property at the time of the shooting. The motel is located outside of Waynesboro at 494 Three Notched Mountain Highway.
Davis is charged with voluntary manslaughter, which carries a maximum term of 10 years in prison. He is being held without bond at Middle River Regional Jail.
Mawyer's body was taken to the medical examiner's office in Roanoke for an autopsy.
The sheriff's office said the investigation into Mawyer's death is ongoing.
