LUDHIANA: The Vigilance Bureau on Thursday arrested assistant sub-inspector (ASI) Mukhtiar Singh — deputed at Jamalpur police station — for accepting a
bribe of Rs10,000, which was recovered from his pocket. The ASI had accepted the bribe from a man for taking action on his complaint.
Deputy superintendent of police (DSP) in the Economic Offence wing, Kulwant Rai, said Mohan Lal of Ram Nagar in Mundian had made a complaint to the Vigilance Bureau stating that his son Ram Sarai died in July last year. “After Ram’s death, his wife Paramjit Kaur and son Gurpreet Singh started harassing us with the intention of grabbing our property,” alleged Mohan Lal. He also alleged that the accused used to beat them up.
He added that he had filed five applications to the police commissioner, but not one was addressed. He came to know that all applications were marked to ASI Mukhtiar Singh. The ASI then demanded Rs20,000 as bribe for acting on the complaints. The deal was cracked for Rs15,000, out of which he was paid Rs5,000 in advance, and the rest to be paid on Thursday.
The DSP said as Mukhtiar accepted the bribe on Thursday, the Vigilance Bureau caught him red-handed, and registered an FIR against him under sections 7 and 13 (2) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
