BENGALURU: Four of the accused persons arrested by SIT in connection with the journalist Gauri Lankesh murder case were remanded to judicial custody for 14 days by a city court on Thursday. When they were produced before the court, Amol Kale, who is accused of masterminding the murder, alleged that the police had tortured him.
As the police custody of the four accused — Amol Kale alias Bhaisaab, Sujeet Kumar alias Praveen, Amit Degwekar alias Pradeep Mahajan and Manohar Edave alias Manoj — ended on Thursday, the SIT officials produced them before the court of the 1st ACMM judge.
N P Amrutesh, the advocate representing them, brought to the notice of the court that Kale was tortured by police and sought the court to order a medical check-up immediately to find out what kind of torture was meted out to Kale. The magistrate told them to raise the issue in the regular court. However, the defense counsel requested the magistrate to personally examine the injuries.
Showing the injuries, Kale told the court, “Wednesday night I was tortured by the police. They punched me below the left eye and banged my head against a wall. They assaulted me on my legs and left palm”. The judge recorded his statement and asked the counsel to argue the matter in the regular court on Friday.
Meanwhile, Kale’s elder sister and brother-in-law met him. Wearing a black mask, Kale spoke to them for 5-10 minutes in the presence of SIT staff. Manohar Edave’s elder brother met him and spoke for a few minutes.
