The by-election for Binnypet ward has been scheduled on June 18 between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Polling will take place in 37 booths that have been set up across the ward. A total of 34,572 people — 17,746 men and 16,826 women — are eligible to cast their votes.

The ward has been reserved for general (woman) category. The contestants are Janata Dal (S) candidate Aishwarya B.N., BJP candidate Chamundeshwari G. and Congress candidate Srividya Shashikumar.

According to a press release issued by the State election commission on Thursday, mustering and demustering centres have been established at the Smt. VHD Central Institute of Home Science (popularly known as Home Science College). Counting of votes will take place on June 20 at Home Science College. A holiday has been declared June 18 for local institutions, departments and industries, the release stated.

The by-election was necessitated by the demise of Binnypet councillor Mahadevamma Nagaraj in January following cardiac arrest. She had been on a pilgrimage to Tirupati with her family. The Congress leader was a two-time councillor from Binnypet, which comes under Gandhinagar Assembly constituency.
