Residents of Bejai Anegudde on Thursday demanded removal of a portion of the compound wall across a small drain joining the main drain which, they said, was a cause for inundation in the area following heavy rain on May 29. It was here that roof of two houses were damaged.

The residents drew the attention of Revenue Minister R.V. Deshpande and Urban Development Minister U.T. Khader on this during their visit to the area on Thursday.

Bejai Anegudde was among the places the two Ministers visited as a part of review of relief measures taken by the district administration.

After the two Ministers had a look at the condition of the two damaged houses, a resident said: “The houseowner has laid a small pipe to drain out the water, which is not sufficient.”

He and other residents said this was the cause for water reaching a waist-high level on May 30.

He and other residents told Ministers that it was imperative for the Mangaluru City Corporation to have proper system to drain out water in the locality.

While assuring of action, Mr. Deshpande and Mr. Khader presented Anuradha and Purushottam, the residents of the two houses that were damaged, with cheque each of ₹1 lakh.

Mr. Deshpande and Mr. Khader then proceeded to a private hospital near Kuntikana Junction to meet a child and a woman, who are being treated for injury suffered following fall of a portion of a house in the city. “The woman has to undergo operation and she is under financial duress. I have asked Mr. Senthil to arrange for her treatment cost,” Mr. Deshpande told reporters.

The two Ministers visited Uchilla Batpady near Someshwar where the district administration has taken up work to have sea wall to prevent damage to houses off the beach.
