Five area Girl Scouts are among 40 who will receive the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouting, Saturday morning at the Pittsburgh Marriott North in Cranberry Township.

Girl Scouts of Western Pennsylvania will recognize Grace Oram of Beaver and Sewickley residents Allison Lenhardt, Emma Ruhl, Bearett Tarris and Nina Wiggins at a Court of Awards Ceremony. In all, 87 Girls Scouts merited the award, which were also presented at a ceremony last month in Blairsville. All honorees receive a Gold Award pin.

Each completed a service project that focused on improving their communities. Cumulatively, the recipients logged about 7,000 hours designing and implementing the projects, which addressed issues such as poverty, bullying and the environment.

Oram, a 2018 graduate of Beaver Area High School, made laser-engraved informational signs for the Ed Calland Arboretum Trail in Bradys Run Park in Brighton Township.

Lenhardt, an avid runnner and senior at Quaker Valley High School, created a running camp tailored for young boys in elementary school.

Ruhl, a junior at Quaker Valley who earned a third degree black belt in karate, developed a three-night karate instructional program for middle school students.

Quaker Valley High School graduate Tarris created a virtual nature walk of the nearby Fern Hollow Nature Center that she presented to area residents to acquaint and explain the center’s environmental programs.

Wiggins, also a junior at Quaker Valley, collected, cleaned, and sorted more than 2,000 pairs of eyeglasses, took the glasses to Honduras, then with others set up a week-long eye clinic during the mission trip.
