Central Hamilton business district affected by power outage

Hamilton businesses in the southern end of Victoria St lost power on Thursday morning.

A man has been treated for burns after a power outage in central Hamilton on Thursday morning.

The WEL Networks staff member was taken to Waikato Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. 

"Our first priority is to provide the appropriate support for our staff member as well as his colleagues who were at the work site this morning," WEL Services general manager Mat O'Neill said in a statement.

"The cause of the outage is still unknown at this stage and we are continuing to investigate."  

There are still some properties that remain without power and it's not known when they will be reconnected. 

Over 100 properties on the southern end of Hamilton's Victoria Street lost power on Thursday morning. 

It's understood that a worker may have cut through a main and possibly received a shock. 

A Riverview apartment owner said there had been work going on in the area a few days ago and power had been out from 3am - 7am. 

"This morning I saw an ambulance and police there. I was told someone had cut through the mains and got a shock."

A St John's spokeswoman said that they had transported a 56-year-old man to Waikato Hospital in a moderate condition. 

"We attended a construction incident at 8.45am. It appears that a person had cut through a cable."  

The unplanned outage is now affecting approximately 17 properties in the area between Garden Place and Grantham St.
