PUNE: Sunita Jadhavar, a resident of Vadgaon Budruk, was the first beneficiary under the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay accident
insurance scheme floated by the
Pune Municipal Corporation. Jadhavar received Rs 5 lakh from the PMC on Wednesday. Currently, claims of the kin of four more accident victims are being scrutinised.
“My husband died on the spot when a four-wheeler hit him from behind while he was walking along the Pune-Bengaluru highway on April 9. My brother-in-law told me about the civic body’s insurance scheme for regular taxpayers,” said Jadhavar, who stays in Shelkenagar.
Sanjeev Wavare, assistant medical officer of health, PMC, said, “In case of death in road accident, Rs 5 lakh is given to the taxpayers’ heir or heirs. In case of permanent disability, the money is given as per the extent of the disability and how it has affected the livelihood and quality of life.” It, however, does not cover treatment and hospitalisation expenses.
The scheme, which came into force from March 1, 2018, will be effective till February 27, 2019. The health department has opened a special cell to address queries regarding the insurance scheme. The cell officials can be contacted on telephone number: 020-25501233/27.
The PMC has shortlisted through tender process a public sector insurance company for the scheme. It pays annual premium to the company against which the insurance company settles claims after scrutinising the documents, including payment receipts of property tax and post-mortem reports of the accident victim.
District-wise and city-wise statistics released by the office of the additional commissioner of police (traffic), Mumbai, earlier showed that Pune was the only city among the nine police commissionerates in the state where the number of accidents had gone up.
