Now at FIU, Allen was as dominant as ever in 2018
When Logan Allen turned down the Baltimore Orioles' maximum offer of $635,000 last summer, and instead opted to play college ball at FIU, the former University star admitted he was essentially betting on himself.
Nearly one year into that bet, Allen's gamble seems to be paying off.
On Thursday, Allen was named to the Perfect Game/Rawlings College Freshmen All-American First Team after a superb season with the Panthers. The former Gatorade Player of the Year hit .309 during his freshman campaign, with a pair of home runs, five doubles and 16 RBIs. Allen played mainly first base, but was named to the First Team as a utility player.
Allen's first college home run came as a pinch-hitter, and proved to be the game-winner in a 2-1 win over UTSA in April.
On the mound, the lefty went 5-5 with a 3.89 ERA, and struck out a team-high 85 batters in 74 innings. Allen broke the FIU freshman record for strikeouts per nine innings (10.34), and the 85 punchouts ranked second on the FIU freshman strikeouts list.
Allen, of course, is no stranger to awards.
The former Titan was named The News-Journal's Player of the Year three straight seasons, including last spring when he tossed a no-hitter in his final start to propel University to the state title game.
Allen has now been named a Freshman All-American by three different publications this season, including the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The lefty was also named to Conference USA's All-Freshman Team last month.
