Rajkot: The new mayor, deputy mayor and standing committee chairman for Rajkot will be announced at the Rajkot Municipal Corporation (RMC) general board meeting on Friday.
The mayor’s position is reserved for woman. So, it is expected that the other two positions will be occupied by male councillors.

According to ruling BJP sources, current deputy mayor Darshita Shah is the frontrunner for the mayor’s post. The other contender for the mayor’s position is Bina Acharya.

However, considering the general election in 2019, BJP may decide on a Patidar candidate for the mayor’s post. There are two names from the Patidar community doing rounds — Kiran Sorathia and Jagruti Kadia. Interestingly, Kadia is also associated with the Khodaldham Trust, the apex body of the Leuva Patidar community.

For the position of deputy mayor, top contenders are Ashvin Molia and Manish Radia. Molia represents the Leuva Patidar community while Radia represents the Raghuvanshi community.

Sources said that city BJP chief Kamlesh Mirani was top contender for the post of RMC standing committee chairman. Councillors Uday Kangad and Kashyap Shukla too are in the race.

The names of the mayor, deputy mayor and others will be finalized by the BJP top brass in Gandhinagar.
