The Henshaw family has already produced a pair of Division I athletes. Flagler Palm Coast's fast-rising senior offensive line prospect Verneal Henshaw appears poised to make it three.
After an eye-opening camp performance at Mercer University in Georgia, Henshaw has reeled in three FBS offers since the start of June. The 6-foot-4, 265-pound tackle claimed offers from Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Tulane.
Named to the All-Area first team last fall, Henshaw feels a sense of relief after showcasing what he can do in the trenches.
"(College coaches) really liked how I flew around. They could see I have good footwork and can keep up with tempo," Henshaw said. "I didn't really get tired in any of the drills. I was busting out, flying through everything. There were a lot of people bending down, just gassed, like super tired."
Henshaw said he's going to take an unofficial visit to Georgia Southern on Friday and attend another camp at Florida International later this summer.
While other FPC players garnered attention during the spring evaluation period, the action remained relatively quiet for Henshaw.
"I think people wanted to see what they saw on film in person," Bulldogs coach Travis Roland said. "I think they don't know how big his body really is. He's aggressive. I don't know if you can necessarily tell aggression on film. Verneal's a trash-talker."
Henshaw's competitiveness extends to the basketball court, including head-to-head clashes with two of his older sisters. Jasmine, 24, played at Eastern Kentucky, and Tamara, 20, is a former News-Journal Player of the Year who just completed her second year at South Florida.
"With Tamara, we'd have the sister-brother crap-talking. It's all love at the end of the day, but we get after each other," he said. "We always want to show each other up and push each other to the next level. Now that she's made it to that level, of course I want to go bigger, but she's been one of my biggest supporters and always letting me know how proud she is.
"It just fuels me even more because I just want to prove to everybody that it runs in the family. I have to go D-I. It's in our blood."
Plummer rejoins USF's 2019 class
Mainland senior defensive back Andrew Plummer IV re-committed to South Florida on Sunday night.
Plummer (6-2, 180) backed off his verbal pledge to the Bulls on Feb. 20, but is back on board following the annual Sling & Shoot 7-on-7 tournament. In the time between, he pocketed offers from Cincinnati, Colorado State, Iowa State, Marshall, Rutgers, South Alabama, Southern Mississippi, Tennessee State and Tulane.
During his junior year, Plummer recorded 26 total tackles, three pass breakups and one interception. He's the second local player to pick USF this year, joining DeLand athlete Demaurez Bellamy.
Michigan, Kentucky join hunt for Williams
Following his decommitment from Miami, DeLand junior Avantae Williams continues to field offers from the nation's top football programs.
Williams (6-0, 170) said he gained offers from both Michigan and Kentucky this week. His list already includes Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, USC and Florida State, where he unofficially visited this past weekend.
Selected to the 2020 Under Armour All-American Game, Williams should be a fixture in the Bulldogs' secondary this fall. He spent the 2017 season at IMG Academy in Bradenton.
Alabama A&M offers FPC trio
Three Flagler Palm Coast defenders said they landed offers from Alabama A&M this week — linebacker Tallin Coates and defensive backs Dennis Shorter and Marquise Gilbert.
It's only the second offer for All-Area first-team pick Coates (6-3, 215), and his first from an FCS scholarship program. Coates finished third in the area with 114 tackles, including 18 for loss, as a junior.
Alabama A&M scooped up a pair of players in its 2018 recruiting class, the Mainland receiving duo of Tank Dell and Brian Jenkins.
University's Hunt scores Valpo offer
University senior wide receiver/defensive back Jalyx Hunt said he received an offer from Valparaiso.
Hunt (6-2, 190) attended the Chicagoland Showcase, hosted by Northwestern University last weekend. The late-bloomer also claims an offer from West Florida and has been on the radar of a handful of FCS programs, including Harvard, Bucknell and Cornell.
