Renowned artist Surendra Pal dead

JAIPUR: Renowned contemporary artist Surendra Pal Joshi passed away late on Tuesday night at a private hospital in the city. He was 63 years old. Joshi, who was born in Dehradun, had moved to Jaipur after completing his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Arts and Crafts College, Lucknow.

After moving to Jaipur, he worked as an assistant professor at the Rajasthan School of Art. A well-known painter, Joshi had held 22 solo exhibitions. His works are displayed at the Uttara Museum for Contemporary Art in Dehradun. He was suffering from illness for a long time. He is survived by his two children.

The death came as a shock for several people in the artist community.

‘Big loss in the field of art in Raj’

“It’s a big loss in the field of art in Rajasthan. Joshi has always shown the characteristics of a real artist. He was committed to his art,” said Vinay Sharma, senior artist and exhibition officer. He was a close colleague of Joshi.

“I’ve known Joshi for about 30 years and he was an artist right till the end. A joyful person, he leaves behind great artworks for the youth who’ll pursue this field,” said Nathulal Verma, a retired fine arts professor.

Joshi, who was born in Dehradun, had moved to Jaipur after completing his bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the Arts and Crafts College, Lucknow. After moving to Jaipur, he had worked as an assistant professor at the Rajasthan School of Art.

A well-known painter, Joshi had done 22 solo exhibitions. Joshi was also a master in contemporary Indian art and his work included a helicopter created from one lakh safety pins with a structure of steel rods and wires. His works are displayed at the Uttara Museum for Contemporary Art in Dehradun.

His abstract and mural works have been well appreciated and received several awards, including the Rajiv Gandhi Excellence Award and UNESCO gold medal, at the national and international levels.

Joshi was suffering from an illness for long and passed away during treatment at a private hospital in the city, late on Tuesday night. He is survived by his two children. “My father always used to advise us to keep working hard silently and it would pay off. We have lost out biggest inspiration,” said Parichay, Joshi’s son.
