SURAT: Two cadaver donations in a day in the city on Thursday gave a new lease of life to six people. From June 3 to 14, cadaver donations of 13 kidneys, six livers and 10 eyes in the city have saved the lives of as many as 29 people.
Rajendra Patil (42), who worked as helper in Kadodara dyeing mill, was returning home on May 30 on his motorcycle with his brother-in-law when they were hit by a vehicle at Vareli. Rajendra fell from the motorcycle and his head hit a road divider. Patil developed a clot in his brain. He was first taken to SMIMER hospital and then to Bankers Heart Institute. On May 31, a surgery was performed on him, but he remained in coma. He was declared dead on June 13. He is survived by wife Ratna, sons Ganesh and Pramod as well as daughters Poonam, and Sapna. Maharashtra, agreed to Donate Life’s suggestion to donate Rajendra’s organs.
Forty-eight-year-old farm labourer Bhilakiya Gamit of Tapi was returning home from Bardoli a few days ago when he was hit by a vehicle near Mirkot village of Songadh. He was taken to Raferal Hospital in Songadh and shifted to New Civil Hospital. He was declared dead on June 13. Bhilakiya’s wife Devliben, 45, and daughters Sheela, Neela and Ila also agreed to donate his organs.
A team of doctors from the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Ahmedabad, harvested four kidneys and two livers from the two bodies and transplanted them in recipients on Thursday.
Navsari resident Naresh Surti, Ahmedabad resident Gautam Patel, Bhopal resident Ankit Kathiriya and Lucknow resident Mamta Bhasin underwent kidney transplants. The two livers of Rajendra and Bhilakiya were transplanted in Himmatnagar resident Manish Shah and Vadodara resident Mitesh Chauhan.
