Federer, 37, has entered the latter end of his career and he is expected to hang up his racket in the near future.
The Swiss star already sits out of the clay-court season because of the toll it takes on his body.
But Federer’s former coach, who helped him to rediscover his current form, has told him not to prolong his retirement too long.
Edberg had a farewell tour in 1996 but he advised his ex-pupil to avoid it because of the pressure that brings.
Everyone should find their own way to end their career
“It was something unusual and I would not suggest it to anyone because it created an extra pressure,” Edberg told Tennis Magazine.
“I don't regret it, it was a great year. I was welcomed everywhere. People appreciated my results.
“Everyone should find their own way to end their career.
“One thing you should not do is to announce your last tournament too much early.
