Rahul Gandhi’s hi-bye press meet
Takes just one question at Bandra media interaction.
It was probably one of the shortest political press conferences in India and it lasted less than three minutes. On Tuesday night, a message was sent by the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee that Congress President Rahul Gandhi would hold a press conference in the city on Wednesday, between 8.30 and 8.45 pm, at the Mumbai Cricket Association in Bandra.
But on Wednesday, Gandhi not only arrived almost 50 minutes late, but wrapped up the press conference in 15 minutes, and left.
The Mumbai Congress unit later clarified that there had been a “miscommunication” by its media co-coordinators regarding Gandhi’s interaction with journalists.
Mumbai Regional Congress Committee President Sanjay Nirupam, who had accompanied Gandhi, said that after the party workers’ meeting in the city on Tuesday, some TV news reporters had contacted him seeking a “byte” from the Congress chief.
“I informed Rahulji, and he told me he would give a byte before leaving for Chandrapur on Wednesday morning. It was supposed to be in the garden, but the Special Protection Group [Gandhi’s security detail] said no to this. So we shifted to a hall. Hence there was a miscommunication that it would be a press conference.”
Gandhi left in just over two minutes, after taking one question from the media. He parried other questions on who would be the UPA’s primeministerial candidate for 2019.
“All parties are united against the PM. These sentiments are not just with the political leaders, but also with the people. Congress is thwarting all attempts by the PM and the BJP to attack the Constitution,” Gandhi said.

He said the BJP government was working only for the rich. “In Manmohan Singh’s tenure, petrol cost $140 a barrel; now petrol costs just $70 dollar abarrel. Yet, petrol and diesel is expensive [in India]. Where does this money go? It is used to clear the debts of the ultra-rich,” Gandhi said.
