Hot weather courtesy of a system from the west is on its way to Michigan.
“There’s a lot of heat building in the plains area (of the U.S). Our winds will sort of draw that into the state with time this weekend,” said Mark Sekelsky, meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids, on Thursday.
High temperatures over 90 degrees Fahrenheit will move in this weekend.
Friday’s forecast calls for a high temperature of 85 degrees Fahrenheit with a low of 66 degrees with sunny skies, the National Weather Service office in Grand Rapids reports. A 10 percent chance of precipitation is forecast with south-southeast 5 mph winds.
Morning thunderstorms could come Saturday; a 60 percent chance of precipitation is forecast.
The high temperature is expected to be 89 degrees with a low of 72 degrees and winds at 9 mph in a southwestern direction.
The potential for lightning puts the fire danger at a high rating on Saturday.
Heat will move in Sunday; the high temperature is expected to be 93 degrees with a low of 74 degrees.
A 20 percent chance of precipitation is forecast along with partly cloudy skies and winds at 13 mph in a west-southwest direction.
High temperatures will continue into Monday; the high is forecast 91 degrees with a low of 63 degrees.
Scattered thunderstorms could occur; a 50 percent chance of precipitation is forecast.
West-southwest winds at 10 mph are forecast.
However, the heat throughout the weekend won’t last.
“It’s not an indicator of how the rest of the summer’s going to be,” Sekelsky said.
A 90-day climate prediction map indicates mid-Michigan has an equal chance of high temperatures as other parts of the state.
However, the probability for precipitation over the next 90 days is at least 50 percent in mid-Michigan, another map indicated.
