A vehicle hit a bridge on Christchurch's Tunnel Rd, then was hit by a second vehicle, which also crashed into the bridge.
A woman has died and four others have been injured in a bridge crash on a Christchurch highway.
A police spokeswoman confirmed emergency services were called to the crash on Tunnel Rd (State Highway 74), near the Lyttelton Tunnel, about 5.30pm on Thursday.
The woman died at the scene and three men in the same car sustained minor to moderate injures, Canterbury Metro Commander Superintendent Lane Todd said.
Four people were injured and one woman was killed in the crash near Lyttelton Tunnel on Thursday evening.
The group were in a vehicle that crashed into a bridge.
A second vehicle crashed into the first, before also hitting the bridge. Its driver, the sole occupant, was taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor injuries, Todd said.
Police advised motorists to avoid the area as Tunnel Rd was not accessible via Port Hills Rd or Ferry Rd.
Emergency services were on site and it was expected they would be there for several hours.
A diversion was in place and motorists should follow the direction of emergency services.
The police serious crash unit and CIB are investigating.
