Deputies recovered a stolen gun and various drugs after stopping a stolen car near Daytona Beach during a crime suppression operation, officials said.
Shortly after 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 1200 block of Leon Lane, the Volusia County Sheriff's Office attempted a traffic stop on a red Chevrolet Impala, but the driver bailed without putting the vehicle in park, so it rolled into a chain-link fence.
Deputy Steven Woell approached the vehicle and ordered the passenger, Jamie Cash, to show his hands, sheriff's spokesman Andrew Gant said. Woell noticed Cash tried to conceal a handgun, at which time Cash jumped out of the car and ran, according to the Sheriff's Office. Woell chased him and took Cash into custody a short distance away, Gant said.
A perimeter was established and a K-9 unit responded, but the driver was not found, deputies said. A .380-caliber Ruger was found inside the vehicle. The Ruger, which contained a magazine with six bullets, including one in the chamber, was reported stolen out of Edgewater, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Deputies also found a backpack containing methamphetamine, oxycodone, ecstasy and other drugs, Gant said.
Deputies later learned the vehicle had been stolen out of Holly Hill, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Cash was charged with grand theft motor vehicle, armed trafficking, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and various other charges. He remained in custody Thursday at the Volusia County Branch Jail and his bail was set at $131,000, Gant said.
