DeKALB – Now that all of the appropriate parking signs for the second phase of DeKalb police’s Safe Streets Initiative have been installed, the department began a two-week grace period for affected motorists Wednesday.

Phase 2 of the initiative prohibits on-street parking except for permitted residents in the College/John neighborhood in DeKalb’s 5th Ward and a narrow strip of property in the Annie Glidden North area from Hyacinth Lane to Newman Lane.

Individuals who violate these parking restrictions during the grace period will not be ticketed. Instead, a green notice warning of parking changes will be placed on vehicles in violation of the crime-reduction plan.

Residents who qualify for a parking permit can submit an application to the DeKalb Police Department for no charge. A PDF of the permit application can be found on the Safe Streets page of the city’s website.

Permits will be valid until August 2018. They will then run alongside the university school year. Permits will then be available to buy and be valid from August 2018 until July 2019.

Phase 3, which unanimously was approved by the DeKalb City Council in May, would establish no-parking zones from 2 to 6 a.m. in a section west of North Annie Glidden Road along West Hillcrest Drive. Phase 4 would expand these restrictions to an area east of Annie Glidden Road covering Kimberly Drive, Greenbrier Road and Edgebrook Drive.
