18-year-old pulled out by man fishing nearby and sent to hospital.

A Lakeville woman was sucked into the Charles Mill Dam early Thursday morning and was pulled out by a man fishing nearby.

The woman, 18, is at OhioHealth Mansfield Hospital; her condition is unknown, said Chief Deputy Carl Richert.

A man called into the Ashland County Dispatch Center around 2:15 a.m. and told dispatchers that the 18-year-old was sucked into the dam.

“I can’t see her anywhere,” he told dispatchers in the 911 call recording.

According to the recording, she became visible and then disappeared again. It was then that the caller saw Jared Tims, of Frederickstown, pull her out of the spillway on the south side of the dam, place her on the rocks and start CPR.

“Someone fishing down there just found her,” he said.

The woman was unresponsive when she was pulled out of the water, Richert said.

According to a news release from the Sheriff’s Office, the incident started when three male friends were fishing at the dam when they were joined by two sisters, one of whom was the one who was sucked into the dam. They both were being pulled toward the dam, but one was able to get away, Richert said.

The 18-year-old was pulled and disappeared, which is when the 911 call was placed.

“She is lucky so far in that she didn’t get caught in that dam,” Richert said. “We just have to wait and see what God wants now.”

Mifflin Fire and EMS from Ashland and Richland County responded to the incident, along with the Ashland County Sheriff’s Office. The dive team was activated but ultimately canceled after Tims was able to get the 18-year-old out of the water.

The area where the incident occurred is a no swimming area.
