Vigil on social media to continue till draft NRC publication: State DGP

The Assam police is going to continue the vigil on social media to ensure that no one can misuse it to create disturbances in the run up to June 30, when the updated draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) is scheduled to be published.

Assam Director General of Police Kuladhar Saikia said while interacting with newsmen on Wednesday and added that social media monitoring has become necessary particularly after the gruesome lynching of two youths by a mob at Dokmoka in Karbi Anglong district last week.

“We will continue with the vigil on social media to ensure that no one can spread hate messages or objectionable posts on social media as the NRC updation is a sensitive issue. We have been reviewing the law and order situation in each districts ahead of the June 30 and I believe there should not be any law and order problem in the run up to June 30,” said the DGP.

“However, the police are in a position to deal with any untoward situation and security arrangements are being reviewed dynamically,” he said.

Asked about requirements of additional forces, Saikia said that Central Government had already sent 85 companies of central para military force (CPMF) ahead of the December 31 last year when first draft of the NRC was published.

“The Central Government has assured to send us all the required additional forces.

We are going to send the requirements after assessing the situation in district level,” Saikia said. 

It may be mentioned here that Saikia, Assam Chief Secretery, TY Das, Alok Kumar Addl CS (Home) and several other top police and civil administration official visited Darrang district on Wednesday and took stock of the emerging law and order and internal security situation of the districts of Darrang, Udalguri,and Sonitpur .

The DCs, SPs and senior officers of police, Army and other CAPFs engaged in the districts took part in the discussion. The various issues relating to internal security and emerging law and order situation were discussed threadbare . The importance of constant interaction with people of all walks of life to allay any apprehension of public, the facility available to all in respect of claims and objections for which an exhaustive awareness programme is being launched , and other relevant issues were highlighted.
