Karnataka: BJP, JD(S) men win in council Polls

BJP candidate MY Nayaranswamy was elected as MLC  from South East Teachers Constituency, while JD (S) candidate Marithibbe Gowda was re-elected to the council from South Teachers constituency.

BENGALURU: BJP candidate MY Nayaranswamy was elected as Member of Legislative Council (MLC)  from Karnataka South East Teachers Constituency, while JD (S) candidate Marithibbe Gowda was re-elected to the council from South Teachers constituency.

Marithibbe Gowda, who is also the deputy chairman of the council, has won for the fourth time from South Teachers constituency, while Nayaranswamy had unsuccessfully contested in the recent assembly election from Hebbal in Bengaluru.

Biennial elections to the Karnataka legislative council from three graduates and three teachers constituencies were held on Friday as the sitting members were retiring on June 21. Counting of votes which was taken up on Tuesday was still on till late night.

The retiring members include legislative council chairman DH Shankar Murthy, who represented Karnataka South West Graduates constituency, Ramesh Babu, Marithibbe Gowda, Capt Ganesh Karnik, Ramachandra Gowda and Amarnath Patil. As many as 75 candidates, including three sitting MLCs, had contested the elections from six constituencies. In the 75 member legislative council, Congress has 34 members, BJP-20 and JD (S) has 14 members. Three independents are there and four seats are vacant.
