HYDERABAD: Answer-scripts of University College of Engineering, Osmania University (OU) will be evaluated in online from this academic year, said S Ramachandram Rao, OU vice-chancellor during an interaction with the media on Wednesday.

The university is all set to switch over to online evaluation in a phased manner. "The answer-scripts will be scanned by the university through which evaluators will be able evaluate them online. Through this, we will reduce the burden of physically handling over 15 lakh answer scripts every-year," said Ramachandram.

The decision comes after the university damaged nearly 8,000 answer-scripts in a fire mishap that occurred on June 5, forcing the university to re-conduct the BSc exam this month-end.

"The online evaluation process is being followed by the Visvesvaraya Technological University in Karnataka. We have studied their model and intend to follow the same. Once the online evaluation process runs successfully for engineering courses, it will be extended to the post-graduate and under-graduate courses in a phased manner," added Ramachandram.

The university has a record of conducting exams each year for over 1,000 subjects involving 16 lakh students. The process involves confidential work of coding, evaluation, tabulation and announcement of results. Officials said that the other way of reducing the evaluation burden is to encourage more number of colleges to attain autonomous status.

"If colleges attain autonomy then they will not only be able to fix their own courses but also take charge for conducting exams and evaluation process. However, we are facing challenges in convincing several colleges to attain autonomous status and be independent," admitted Ramachandram.

Apart from this, the university has also introduced "challenging the valuation" scheme. The new scheme will help students challenge their evaluation. To apply for the scheme, student will have to pay Rs 10,000 to challenge the evaluation.
