Telangana: Karimnagar’s Town Circle to become a tourist spot soon

KARIMNAGAR:  The Tower Circle in Karimnagar town that was constructed during the Nizam era and holds historical importance will now be developed as a tourism centre. The Tower Circle presently stands tall right in the centre of the town and the authorities of Municipal Corporation of Karimnagar (MCK) are preparing an action plan for the purpose.

As part of Smart City development programme, district collector Sarfaraz Ahmed, MLA Gangula Kamalakar, MCK Mayor S Ravinder Singh and commissioner K Shashanka visited Amritsar in Punjab two days ago to study the city and develop Karimnagar city on similar lines. MCK commissioner told Express that they were contemplating to develop 750 metres radius from the Tower Circle to the next junction as a pedestrian zone. Vehicles will not be allowed into this zone and a parking zone will be created for the purpose. The entire pedestrian zone will also be laid with tiles.

The authorities are also mulling the idea of inviting expert architects in order to build a unique elevation or facades surrounding the Tower Circle. To attract tourists, the streetlights and underground drainage and power supply lines will be installed. To make city sanitation free, a dustbin will be placed in every 15 metres.

Significance of the Clock Tower

During the regime of Seventh Nizam ruler Mir Osman Ali Khan, the then district collector constructed the clock tower in 1928. Presently, the clock tower is the centre of Karimnagar town. As part of town development, the locals constructed Kaman (gateway of Karimnagar) at the entrance of the city.
