Surat: The Surat city Congress is likely to get new office bearers next week as party members are demanding change in leadership in the civic body as well as at city level.
More than 25 out of 36 Congress councillors in Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) have demanded change in leadership and demanded new president for city Congress, claiming that not much work has been done under the present city president Hasmukh Desai.
Congress councillor Aslam Cyclewala from ward 18 of Anjana and Khatodara said, “Under leadership of Papan Togadia in SMC and Hasmukh Desai in city, Congress did not win a single seat in 2017 assembly elections. Also, there was no increase in our party membership. We need fresh blood that can work on the lines of party policy and be aggressive in approach.”
Commenting on Cyclewala’s demand, Desai told TOI, “My term is coming to an end and it is natural that some people who have not got a chance would make a hue and cry about it. Currently we are focusing on district panchayat where we are ruling. Once that is over, a 12 member committee would decide on change if required.”
