Straight out of a film: Telangana woman constructs toilet with her savings

SANGAREDDY: Her story seems straight out from the scripts of Bollywood. In fact, it draws huge similarities to the blockbuster Toilet: Ek Prem Katha, with all but one difference: Aleveni did not leave her husband’s house protesting the lack of a toilet, but instead got one constructed with her own money.

A resident of Ch Konapur village of Kondapur mandal, Aleveni’s in-law’s house did not have a toilet. A pregnant Aleveni had to walk several kilometres to the outskirts of the village to relive herself. Her requests with the family members to get a toilet built at home went waste as they reportedly felt it was inauspicious to start the construction while she was pregnant.

However, Aleveni was not the one who would give up easily. She went against her in-laws and husband and got the toilet constructed with the money she had saved up for lean days. When the works started, the district collector himself visited the village and congratulated her.

Praising her grit, the collector presented clothes to her and her daughter. Saying that there’s a misbelief in rural areas that construction works should not be taken up when a woman in the family is pregnant, the collector said that Aleveni has managed to overcome it. Against all odds... Aleveli went against her in-laws and husband and got the toilet constructed with the money she had saved up for lean days.
