Back Roads
ABC, 8pm
Heather Ewart's pleasant travelogue continues tonight along the Murray River in South Australia. As has been the case with recent seasons there's not a lot of meat here – issues tend to get the once-over-lightly (including the vexed question of water rights).
But there are lots of delightful characters, some interesting little stories (including the rehabilitation of former grazing land into a thriving wetland), and of course the gorgeous cinematography that makes Back Roads such a pleasure to watch.

Sure, the metaphor about the streets of LA being a warzone is pushed a bit hard. And after Parks and Rec and The Grinder it's getting hard to take Rob Lowe seriously in a heroic role. Not to mention the fact that things would surely be less chaotic if the ER staff at Angels Memorial Hospital could somehow prevent patients from running crazily around the ward. But elsewhere there's nice characterisation and performances (Marcia Gay Harden and Luis Guzman are particularly good) and enough hand-held camera work and quick-cut editing to have even the most placid viewer reaching for the defibrillator.
