Chhatarpur shoot-out case transferred to Crime Branch; one hurt in incident stable

Following the post-mortem and other legal formalities, the Delhi Police on Tuesday handed over the bodies of the gangsters who were killed in an encounter in south Delhi to their respective family members.

A senior police officer said the probe into the shoot-out which killed four criminals in south Delhi’s Chhatarpur on June 9 will be carried out by the Delhi Police Crime Branch.

“It is a procedural part to transfer the case to the Crime Branch for detailed investigation. The encounter was done by Special Cell unit and a case was registered at Fatehpur Beri police station,” said the officer.

On June 9, gangster Rajesh Bharti and three of his associates — Sanjeev alias Sandeep Vidroh, Umesh alias Don and Viresh Rana alias Bhiku — were killed, while eight policemen were injured in the encounter.

Family members of gangsters received the bodies and took it to their villages in Haryana for the last rites.

Last rites

“We are taking the body to our village for the last rites. We know that my cousin was a gangster but killing him was not the solution. The police could have given him a chance to surrender,” said Rajpal, relative of gangster Umesh.

After several efforts rolled out by the Delhi Police, the elder brother and a few relatives of Rajesh Bharti reached the AIIMS mortuary to receive the body.

But, Rajesh’s brother refused to sign the legal papers following which the body was received by a relative.

“I kept no relation with him after he got into the world of crime. My family has suffered a lot because of Rajesh’s criminal activities. I am in grief but cannot take the body to my village,” said Dharamvir, elder brother of Rajesh.

Meanwhile, one of the gangsters, Kapil, who was injured in the encounter, is currently undergoing treatment at the AIIMS Trauma Centre and is said to be out of danger, the police said.
