17 killed as tourist bus rams road divider in UP’s Mainpuri district

The bus lost control near Kiratpur village in Mainpuri and rammed into the road divider.

More than a dozen people were killed and a dozen others injured in UP’s Mainpuri district on Wednesday morning when a private tourist bus lost control and rammed into the road divider, police said.

The private Volvo bus was travelling from Rajasthan’s Jaipur to Farukkhabad in Uttar Pradesh when the accident occurred near Kiratpur village around 5am.

Mainpuri district magistrate Pradeep Kumar confirmed the death of 17 passengers, and said 13 people were injured. Three of the victims sustained severe injuries and were shifted to the Safai hospital in Etawah district, one of whom died during treatment.

Senior police officials from Mainpuri are at the accident spot and cranes have been pressed into action to lift the bus, which turned turtle in the accident.

According to some of the passengers in the bus, the driver was speeding. They also said that many of the deceased were passengers travelling on the roof of the bus.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the deaths and asked the administration to provide appropriate medical treatment to the injured passengers.
