A 20-year-old man is in an area hospital with gunshot wounds after police say he tried to burglarize a home in Arundel.

A homeowner in the block of 1100 block of Flint Hill Road was in his garage at 11:30 p.m., when he heard noises, Master Cpl. Michel Eckerd of New Castle County Police said.

He then armed himself and headed inside, where he found the 20-year-old hiding in a room. The homeowner fired his gun and hit the young man.

"The suspect was known to a family member, but not to the homeowner," Eckerd said.

Police responded to a burglary in progress, and the suspect was taken to the hospital.

The suspect was being treated for life-threatening injuries, and the homeowner is uninjured.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.
