IITs defer call on lowering cut off for admission via JEE

NEW DELHI: Faced with a sharp decrease in the number of students, who have qualified for JEE this year, the IIT Joint Admission Board held a meeting on Wednesday to assess the impact.
Several IIT directors expressed apprehensions about seat vacancies that may arise but also agreed that ideally the cut-off should not be lowered or diluted in any way.
Detailed data analysis of results and seats will be done before any decision is taken ahead of JEE counselling. A meeting may be held on Thursday for the same.
In another development, from July 2021, a PhD degree will be mandatory for teaching at universities, Human Resource Development (HRD) minister Prakash Javadekar said on Wednesday. Those with PhD degree or are NET qualified with master’s degree can apply for assistant professor positions, the government said.
The move has brought back firm focus on PhD degree rather than UGC-NET scores as a key eligibility criteria for teaching positions in higher education.
