Environment Canada issued the warning just after 4 p.m. calling for the possibility of very strong wind gusts, heavy rain and up to nickle-sized hail. The weather agency says it is tracking a cluster of storms moving eastward at approximately 75 km/h.
Toronto police say they have received an influx of weather-related calls Wednesday afternoon, including reports of downed wires and trees.
The city's hydro utility says there are approximately 10,000 people without power in pockets scattered across the city.
The following areas are in the path of the storms: Milton, Burlington, Brampton, Oakville, Mississauga, Vaughan, Newmarket, Richmond Hill, Toronto, Markham and Pickering.
Wind gusts could reach 90 to 100 km/h, which "can toss loose objects, damage weak buildings, break branches off trees and overturn large vehicles," the agency warned earlier.
