Gal Gadot returns as Diana Prince in Wonder Woman 1984.

Director Patty Jenkins and star Gal Gadot on Wednesday shared two first look images from the sequel to Wonder Woman, which began filming earlier this week. Along with the surprising reveal that Steve Trevor, who sacrificed himself at the end of the first film, is alive, Jenkins and Gadot also confirmed the title of the highly anticipated film: Wonder Woman 1984.

In the two pictures - Jenkins and Gadot shared one each - we see Steve Trevor, played by Chris Pine, looking slightly older than we last saw him, surrounded by what appears to be people dressed in ‘80s clothing. This, along with the title, confirms the time period of the film, which was earlier rumoured to be during the Cold War.

In the second picture, we see Diana staring at a wall of television screens, again retaining the ‘80s aesthetic and possibly alluding to George Orwell’s novel, 1984. The title of the film was teased recently in a tweet by former DC Entertainment boss Geoff Johns, who stepped down from his post to transition into a more creative role just this week. Johns is credited as a co-writer on Wonder Woman 1984.

Jenkins officially signed onto the film after the success of the first one, which became a runaway hit and rare critical triumph for the troubled DC Film series. After the unremarkable box office of Justice League, which was the last theatrical appearance of Wonder Woman, DC is currently in a course correction mode.

The sequel is scheduled to be released on November 1, 2019, and will also star Pedro Pascal and Kristen Wiig. The next film on DC’s lineup is November’s Aquaman and Shazam! in April 2019.
