State-wide project expected to start by June 20

The Education Department’s ‘Hello English’ project aimed at improving English learning skills among students in Classes 1 to 7 will soon be rolled out in hundreds of schools across Ernakulam.

The State-wide project is expected to start by June 20 and the Department has already completed training for teachers.

“Hello English will generate opportunities for students to improve their English speaking, writing and listening aptitude. It also helps teachers to step up their English knowledge levels,” said Sajoy George, the district coordinator of Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan.

The trainers will use the advantages of information and communication technology to improve the English learning skills of students. They will encourage them to brush up their creative writing skills. Special focus will be given to physically-challenged students. Teachers will be requested to develop less expensive learning tools as part of classroom learning process. Classroom libraries will help learners to build their reading skills.

Two sessions a week

Two periods in a week will have to be devoted to the Hello English project. Mr. George said there would be two sessions of total four-hour duration every week. The programme will have a ‘Know your learner’ session, where teachers will asses English learning, reading and writing skills of the students.

Special learning tools will be used to assess the learning abilities of students. The school authorities will have to convene a meeting of the parent-teacher association to furnish the assessment results of each learner. ‘Padanolsavam’ will be organised at the end of the first phase of the programme. The improvement made by students in their English learning skills will be displayed before the public. They will come up with performances and activities to showcase their talents at the ‘padanolsavam’.

A district-level monitoring committee will coordinate the effective implementation of the project. A programme coordinator will also be appointed in each district.
