Woman found dead on soccer pitch in Carlton North

Homicide squad detectives are investigating after the body of a young woman was found by a passer-by on a soccer pitch in Carlton North overnight.

The passer-by made the grisly discovery on a soccer pitch in the middle of a popular running track, next to the Melbourne General Cemetery cemetery, just before 3am on Wednesday morning.

"Emergency services were called to a field between Royal Parade and Princes Park Drive after a passer-by found the body of a woman," Victoria Police spokesman Luke Zammit said.

"Paramedics worked on the woman, who is yet to be formally identified, but she was not able to be revived."

It is believed the woman was aged in 30s, but police are yet to confirm this.

The soccer pitch, which is close to Melbourne University, is now in lock-down as Homicide Squad detectives comb the area for clues.

Early morning joggers have been turned away from the area by police.

Radio station 3AW reported the person who called triple zero to report the woman's death is still assisting police.

Homicide detectives are investigating the death, with the exact cause unknown.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

More to come.
