ALBANY — Police identified the man killed Tuesday evening in West Hill as Equan Fallen, 20, of Albany.

Police initially said Fallen was 25 but later said he was 20.

Officers were sent to 448 Livingston Ave., located between North Lake Ave. and Judson Street, at 6:20 p.m. to investigate reports of a shooting and found the victim outside the home, police said.

Next-door neighbor Jeslyn Bretran said she heard about eight gunshots.

"I was inside with my kids. As soon as we heard it, we hit the floor," said Bretran, a mother of four. "I didn't see what happened. I was just worried about my kids."

Her father, Raul Bertran, also heard the shots and peeked out his window.

"I'm a veteran. I know gunfire," Betran said. "When I looked out, I saw a bunch of kids, boys, girls, running away."

Fallen was treated at the scene by Albany firefighters and taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said. No arrests have been made.

According to Fallen's Facebook page he had attended Albany High School and worked a series of retail jobs.

Carlos Morocho, the landlord at 448 Livingston Ave., said he knew the victim who had had been living in a first-floor apartment there with his sisters. Morocho said he believes the shooting could have been drug-related because a lot of drug use was taking place behind his building.

"I was getting a lot of complaints about the smoke," Morocho said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Albany Police Detective Division at 518-462-8039 or submit an anonymous tip to Capital Region Crime Stoppers at capitalregioncrimestoppers.com.

Albany police spokesman Officer Steve Smith declined to discuss the man's injuries before investigators had reviewed an autopsy report.

It is the city's fourth homicide in 2018.

Anthony Malloy, a 35-year-old Albany man, was gunned down on Jan. 5 at the corner of First and Quail streets.

Damien L. Sanders, a 38-year-old Albany man, was beaten and then shot multiple times on April 23 in front of 150 Clinton St. Neither man's killer has been caught.

On June 3, Nahjayyah Daise, a 21-year-old Albany woman, was shot in the head by her ex-boyfriend, who then ran over her body on Erie Boulevard. The man — 22-year-old Larnell Kennedy of Albany — ran from the scene and was struck and killed by a car on Interstate-90 minutes later.

Jeslyn Bertran said Tuesday night's incident is difficult to comprehend.

"It's a shame," she said.
