GURUGRAM: The death of Delhi’s top gangster Rajesh Bharti and three of his accomplices in an encounter with police in the national capital last Saturday came as a respite for Gurugram police as the Bharti gang was planning to expand its footprint in the Millennium City, sources said.

Bharti’s death has also brought relief to Gurugram’s gangster-turned-politician Binder Gujjar, sources said, as the slain Delhi gangster had already joined hands with his arch rival Kaushal gang and was also holding talks with Gadoli gang for a possible “triple axis”.

According to intelligence reports, Bharti had plans to carry out major crimes to gain notoriety in Gurugram, post such an alliance with the two rivals gangs of Gujjar. The Gadoli gang was equally keen on such a tie-up as it’s looking to regain its foothold in Gurugram, post the death of Sandeep Gadoli in an alleged police encounter in Mumbai in 2016.

In case of such a tie-up between the three gangs, their primary target would have been Gujjar. And elimination of Gujjar could have triggered a gang war in the city, sources said.

A senior police official said, on condition of anonymity, said that Kaushal, a parole jumper, “has already joined hands with Bharti gang” and “he has even offered Bharti a contract to eliminate Gujjar”.

“But Bharti’s encounter is a big blow to Kaushal gang as they had already started working together in this city. There were intelligence reports of Kaushal planning to eliminate Gujjar but things have surely changed now,” the police officer said.

According to sources, Kaushal has gone underground after Bharti’s encounter as he fears for his life now.

Gurugram police commissioner Sandeep Khirwar admitted that the Bharti gang had made an entry into Gurugram. “The gang has joined hands with Kaushal gang. They are named in a few cases but had plans to carry out bigger crimes. Now gangs in Gurugram are not highly active. Kaushal is only the biggest rival of Gujjar, who is out on bail. We are keeping a close watch on both.”
