Letters to the editor: Trump and banning breeds

President Trump deserves respect

I am reading the Oakland Press this morning, June 7, 2018. I see the Editorial page and Eugene Robinson’s column entitled “We the people must vote to stop Trump’s abuses.”

Huh? Eugene accuses Trump of colluding with the Russians. There is no evidence that this took place. When Obama was president, he flatly said that there is no way our elections can be tampered with. Until Donald Trump won. Now it has been a non-stop attack on Donald Trump. Donald Trump is our president and I am appalled at the lack of respect the left has heaped on this man.

We have the lowest unemployment rate since 2000 (President Bush’s presidency). We now have more jobs than people to fill them. Where I live, there is more traffic than I have seen in awhile. People are back at work. I don’t understand the constant barrage of misinformation coming from the media to constantly slander President Trump. I, for one, have had it!

There is constant droning about something. The left has tried to root out women who will say that Donald Trump used, raped or groped them. All it did was call out their own: Harvey Weinstein, Kevin Spacey, etc. And now Bill Clinton. I recall during the Clinton presidency, we were told that his dalliance with Monica was a private matter. It happened in the Oval Office!

When I hear President Trump speak, he praises our country and anyone who is nearby. I understand what he is saying and he isn’t full of political speak. He speaks his mind and you know where you stand with him. I love that he shows guts. He has a spine and he is protecting our country.

So keep it up Democrats, liberals and the far left. You look really bad to this citizen.

Banning breeds doesn’t increase safety

Breed specific legislation (BSL) that bans or restricts certain breeds of dogs is ineffective at making communities safer. I urge the Michigan House to quickly pass SB 741, a bill to ban Michigan communities from passing these breed discriminatory ordinances.

Centers for Disease Control opposes BSL for good reason. BSL does not work. Communities are no safer after passing BSL than they were before. In fact, they are more in danger since the dogs are not socialized, unvaccinated, and kept from public eye.

As the American Veterinary Medical Association notes in its report on community dog-bite prevention, “singling out one or two breeds for control can result in a false sense of accomplishment. Doing so ignores the true scope of the problem and will not result in a responsible approach to protecting a community’s citizens.”

Breed specific legislation laws are hard to enforce. Studies have found that even people in animal-related professions can’t accurately identify the breeds just by looking. Tragically, breed-biased laws have caused the deaths of countless dogs whose only crime was to resemble a certain type of dog.

A study by the American Temperament Testing Society gives pit bulls a high passing rate (87.4 percent) that was better than English springer spaniels (85.2 percent), beagles (79.7 percent) and collies (80.8 percent) just to name a few. Furthermore, dogs, including pit bulls, all roughly have about the amount of bite pressure.

Dogs are individuals with individual temperaments and behaviors that are not based on what they look like.
